A commonplace book with extracts from literature on a variety of topics -- moral (self-denial, pride), social (the blind, intemperance, true etiquette, common education), biographical (Adam Burr, Napoleon, Joseph Addison, Milton, Sheridan, John Howard), scientific (the rings of Saturn, the cork tree, food and nutriment) and others. Also included are descriptions of contemporary and local events, such as the exhibition of the sculptural group "Tam O'Shanter" in Boston, the fair (1833 May) at Faneuil Hall for the Institution for the Blind, the Fourth of July Whig Celebration (1834), a "meteoric shower" seen in Boston, the deaths of Lafayette and George Crabbe and a description of a session of the U.S. Senate in 1834. Indexed. With six poems engraved by W.B. Annin of Boston.

William B. Annin was an engraver of portraits, views, and maps in Boston, Ma. He began engraving around 1813. By 1820, he was a partner in the firm, Annin & Smith. He prepared the plates for several well known books, including Jacob Bigelow's American Medical Botany. Annin was a close friend of John R. Penniman, an ornamental furniture painter.
